I see myself as a 'sub-creator' in the spirit of Tolkien. I am called to speak visually to the human condition, both physical and spiritual. I do this by attempting to explore reality beyond our commonly perceived world; whether the reality of this physical world, which we overlook in our busy lives blinded by our preconceptions -- or the reality of the spiritual world -- equally overlooked or misconcieved. The imagination is essential in the practice of 'sub-creation'. Fantasy can reveal human nature clearly; it can also serve as a tool to explore the nature of the divine. I explore reality through the creation of a secondary system, a world of form, design, color, and texture. My forms are drawn from organic reality -- muscle, bone, and sinew -- root, branch, and leaf -- ice, wind, and snow. This world may be entered visually; you can wander around inside it, explore it for yourself. The works are conceived to be viewed on a monumental scale, even as landscapes. Some of the forms have been abstracted for use as functional items in a garden or fountain setting, but their concept is still monumental. I am inspired by other artists, including: Roger Dean, Antoni Gaudi, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Giovanni Bologna, and Michelangelo Buonarroti. In literature and ideas, I read: J.R.R.Tolkien, C.S.Lewis, Steve Scott, and Stanley Hauerwas. In constant gratitude I thank: My maker -- The scource of anything good in me -- Jesus Christ My wife -- The love and joy of my life -- Bethel |
